This airline started as Atlantic Coast Airlines in 1989 as a commuter for United Airlines and Delta Airlines. United withdrew from this arrangement in and the airline, in 2004, started operating under the name of Independence Air until 2006 when it went bankrupt. In March 2006, Northwest Airlines bought the operating certificate of defunct Independence Air to establish a new feeder airline now called Compass Airlines.
