Pan American World Airways, commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier in the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991. Founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida and Havana, Cuba. On June 2, 1927 Juan Trippe formed the Aviation Corporation of the Americas (ACA). The Aviation Corporation of the Americas changed its name to Pan American Airways Corporation in 1931. Pan Am was granted permission to buy National Airlines in 1980. In April 1985, the airline sold Pan Am's entire Pacific Division to United Airlines. Pan Am was forced to declare bankruptcy January 8, 1991. Delta Air Lines purchased the remaining profitable assets of Pan Am.
