US Airways Notes
There is a difference (and some confusion) in the usage of Allegheny/USAir Airlines from other airlines. There are two wings which are constant. One is that the Captain wing is a star and wreath and the other is that the wing with no star is a First Officer. However, upon the purchase of Lake Central Airlines in 1968 and the acquisition of the Nord-262, the Captains who flew this aircraft wore a wing with a star. I have called it the Nord-262 Captain wing for clarity. This wing was used for the first issue only. The Nord was flown by Allegheny from 1968 to 1977. The second issue has no wing with a star. USAir flew the B-727 from 1970 to 1979 and as this was a three man crew, it can be assumed that during this time the First Officer wore the wing with the star and the Second Officer wore the plain wing however, after the B-727's were sold, the wing with the star should not have been worn.
This airline was orignally known as All American Airways and name changed to US Airways in 1979. Then it shows up in history as USAir and then back to US Airways again (See current hat badge). My presumtion is that it was legally US Airways but was sometimes flown as USAir.
